**** Even in its hot days of summer, New York City might seem like an unlikely place to surf.  It’s packed with skyscrapers instead of palm trees, soot instead of sand, congestion instead of salty air. But just hop the A train to the Rockaways.  Or go farther a field toLong Beach or Montauk. The city’s beaches are some of the best places to learn surfing,  Sales of “Beach Boys music” are way up.

**** One of the four hills that constitute the Hills is adorned with four gleaming slides, including what the Trust for Governors Island described as New York City’s longest, 57 feet, and reachable only by scrambling up an imposing mound of blocks. The previous record-holder, 45 feet long, is the curving granite slide at the Billy Johnson Playground in Central Park.  Going down the slippery slope of success.

**** Police have already fired their guns more in 2016 so far than they did during the same time period last year, according to NYPD statistics.  Police opened fire 42 times from Jan. 1 through July 17, 2016 — including during 22 “adversarial conflicts” with suspects including Jermaine Johnson, who was shot and killed by police in East Williamsburg on Sunday after attacking bystanders he believed were federal agents, an NYPD spokeswoman said.  That’s up from a total of 38 police-involved shootings during the same time period in 2015, about a 10.5 percent increase. Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2015, police had fired their guns 67 times, an NYPD spokesman said.  Police in 2016 also fired their guns accidentally seven times, used their guns against themselves twice and fatally shot eight animals, including a pit bull that belonged to a dancer for Madonna.  I used to talk back to a cop.  Now? Never.

**** Nearly a dozen correction officers were taken to the hospital after being exposed to pepper spray at the Manhattan Detention Complex, officials said.  The 11 officers suffered minor injuries after the spray was used when seven inmates refused a cell search, according to the city’s Department of Correction. They were all taken to New York Downtown Hospital for evaluation at about2:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.  No inmates were injured, according to the DOC.  I used to work at this prison.

**** In a series of interrelated complaints, the feds are seeking a total $1 billion in assets paid for with money allegedly stolen by corrupt Malaysian officials and their associates from 1Malaysia Development Board, also known as 1MDB.  The fund “was created to promote economic development with the ultimate goal of improving the well-being of the Malaysian people,” but “unfortunately and tragically, a number of corrupt officials treated this public trust as a personal bank account,” US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said.  The assets include five swank Manhattanproperties: penthouses in the Time Warner Center and WalkerTower, condos in the Park Laurel building and at 118 Greene St., and a stake in the Park Lane Hotel.  Thugs from all over the world are gobbling up property in NYC.

**** The Police Department was investigating gunfire aimed at two uniformed officers in Brooklyn. The department said no one was injured, and it was not clear how many shots were fired.  The Sergeants Benevolent Association said that the two officers were on a foot patrol at Ditmas Avenue and East 23rd Street in the Flatbush-Ditmas Park area when a dark sedan with tinted windows slowly approached them, occupants “made a statement about getting them” and then opened fire.  For some strange reason, NYPD originally said it was not a terrorist attack.  Just target practice?

****Three New Jersey drivers are for racking up a whopping $170,000 in tolls. Denise Simien, 55, of Verona N.J., Willie Reyes, 34, of Hoboken, N.J. and Spirdon Fragoulis, 45, of Colts Neck, N.J. were all nabbed for going through E-ZPass lanes and not paying.  The real thief is the head of the Toll Authority who is on his way to jail.

**** Powerless Outlets on Staten Island Ferry Prompt Electric Reactions From Commuters.  Some riders were frustrated to learn that the Transportation Department regularly shuts off power to outlets on ferries to prevent fights over them.  If it is a big fight, you will be thrown overboard.

**** Wider doors, accordion-like connectors, and USB chargers are three features of the more than 1,000 new and redesigned subway cars the MTA plans to add to the city system. They will not be manufactured in the United States.

**** Rebecca Wasserstrum, 28, was killed when she jumped off the George Washington Bridge.  She is the 7th of this year.

**** Beachgoers were shooed out of the water after shark fins were spotted slicing through the surf at one of the beaches inConey Island. The Parks Department closed the beach near Steeplechase Pier “out of an abundance of safety.” “Because sharks have been sighted.”  It was actually a bunch of lawyers, bankers and stockbrokers out for a swim.
